Our doctors will conduct an evaluation to determine if surgery is the best option for your pet’s condition. If surgery is deemed necessary, you can rest assured that our experienced veterinarians and staff will take the utmost care of your pet and treat it as our own. Since every pet is unique, we complete an assessment prior to surgery and highly recommend a blood work screening that checks baseline blood values of the kidney and liver, as well as glucose and protein levels of patients. This allows us to scan for underlying abnormalities that might prevent us from sedating your pet. Some problems may be undetected without this blood work, even in seemingly young healthy pets.

We understand that anesthesia is scary. It’s very common for people to be concerned, especially when their older pet needs a procedure. To ensure your pet’s safety, we will use the information from our evaluations and take into consideration your pet’s species, breed, age, and health to create an anesthetic protocol best suited to your pet.

Once the surgery is complete, your pet will be brought out of anesthesia and our staff will continue to monitor vital signs and pain levels. Appropriate pain medication will be administered at the discretion of the veterinarian. A pet who is comfortable after surgery heals faster and has an easier recovery.

At Southshore Animal Hospital, we truly believe that the combination of our experience, advanced surgical care, and patient monitoring of vital signs and pain levels throughout all stages of surgery and recovery offer your pet the best chance for surgical success.
